Considering we’re at peak Star Wars hype right now, with the long-awaited sequel The Force Awakens making major bank at the box office, many are pointing out this would be the perfect time for a sequel to the most popular Star Wars parody of all time, 1987’s Spaceballs. Rumors began circulating earlier this year when Mel Brooks joked about releasing “Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money” after The Force Awakens came out:
“And I’m thinking now, if I said, if I did a movie that came out right after Star Wars comes out, you know, maybe a couple of months later,Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money, I’d have a big weekend, you know, no matter what, even if it fell on its ass and you know, didn’t get that money back.”
Ever since Brooks made that comment however, things have been pretty quiet. So is Spaceballs 2 still happening? No one’s really sure, from the sounds of it. Brooks hasn’t mentioned it again in any subsequent interviews and there’s nothing on his IMDB page to indicate that we’ll see a Spaceballs sequel anytime in 2016.
There is still some faint hope however, as Brooks has mentioned before that he wouldn’t do Spaceballs 2 without the involvement of Rick Moranis, who starred in the original. And from the sound of things, Moranis’s schedule is clear if the script for Spaceballs 2 lands in front of him:
“I took a break, which turned into a longer break,” he says. “But I’m interested in anything that I would find interesting. I still get the occasional query about a film or television role” — he’s repped by the Santa Monica-based endorsement firm Bailey Brand Management — “and as soon as one comes along that piques my interest, I’ll probably do it. [But Ghostbusters] didn’t appeal to me.” [via: THR]
It would be a shame if Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money doesn’t become a reality, as Brooks is right: now would be the perfect time for a Spaceballs sequel!
