Here’s The Honest Reason The Hulk Won’t Be Appearing in ‘Captain America: Civil War’

The rosters for the two divided groups of superheroes doing battle in Captain America: Civil War are now pretty clear — although we’re still waiting for a certain wall-crawler to announce his allegiance.

While the world awaits with anxious breath over whether Spider-Man will join Iron Man’s pro-government regulation team or align with Captain America’s stay-out-of-our-business side of things, there is one notable Avenger who doesn’t appear to have any side. Because he’s not in the movie at all.

Bruce Banner and his violent green alter ego, The Incredible Hulk, have already been confirmed to be missing from this Marvel project. But why? Was Mark Ruffalo just busy? Turns out, it’s a lot more simple than that. The reason The Hulk won’t be a part of Civil War is because it just wouldn’t be fair.

According to Entertainment Weekly, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely purposely left out Banner’s character in an effort to keep it a fair fight:

“You put those guys in a fight, it’s over quickly. It’s like, ‘Well, we have the Hulk on our side.’ Oh, fine, then,” Markus says.

In Harry Potter terms, the Hulk is sort of like capturing the Golden Snitch in any conflict: Game over.

“Yeah, I guess we should just call this off,” McFeely says.

“You’ve got to kind of choose your roster depending on what kind of fight you want to have,” Markus adds.

So, that answers that question. For the sake of consistency, The Hulk didn’t appear in the comic book version of Civil War either. Ruffalo has confirmed that his Banner/Hulk will be making another appearance in the Marvel Movie Universe though, in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok.
