It’s been rumored for awhile now but Josh Boone, director of X-Men spin-off movie The New Mutants, has pretty much confirmed that Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams has been cast in the movie as the character Wolfsbane.
While neither he nor Williams have explicitly confirmed the casting, Boone did tag the actress in new concept art of the character that he posted on Twitter:
Williams has previously expressed interest in the role, telling EW in April 2016: “I would absolutely love to a part of it, [and] to be a part of the Marvel family.”
In the Marvel Comics, Rahne Sinclair, a.k.a. Wolfsbane is a Scottish mutant who can transform herself from human to wolf, or a hybrid between the two forms that makes her like a werewolf with control over her powers.
Other actors that have been rumored to be attached to the upcoming movie are Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split) and Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars). Producer Simon Kinberg has previously stated that the film will bring a young-adult vibe to the X-Men series. According to Boone, the line-up of characters so far includes Wolfsbane, Mirage, Cannonball, Sunspot, Magik, and Warlock.
Unfortunately, with The New Mutants being separate from X-Men: Supernova, the upcoming sequel to 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, it’s unclear whether Williams will get the chance to appear with her Game of Thrones co-star Sophie Turner, who plays Jean Grey. Either way, we’ll have to wait for official confirmation on Williams’ casting to begin really speculating over how the two on-screen sisters may join up again in the X-Men franchise.
