Footage of Nicolas Cage Testing Out Superman Costume Is Surreal, Totally 90s

Superman Lives is an infamous 1990s Superman film project with Tim Burton in the directors chair, Kevin Smith serving as the original screenwriter, and Nicolas Cage of all people playing the Man of Steel that never took flight. As far as “film concepts that we would pay ridiculous amounts of money to see now” go, Superman Lives ranks near the top of the list and this newly released behind-the-scenes clip makes it that much more disappointing that we never got to see it.

Released as part of the marketing campaign for Jon Schnepp’s upcoming documentary examining the scrapped project, The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?, the clip shows a younger, leaner Cage moving around in a tight, sculpted Superman costume and posing for photos. While it doesn’t shed any more light on what Burton’s Superman film would have been like (besides being a VERY different take on DC’s legendary hero), it’s fascinating seeing this archival footage from a modern perspective. It’s hard not to wonder what today’s superhero films might look like if Nicolas Cage and Tim Burton had been able to make Superman Lives land.

Be sure to also check out the trailer for Schnepp’s documentary, which is due to be featured at this year’s Comic Con:
