In just over three months, Nikolaj Ancel’s The Dark Tower is set to hit theaters and now we finally have our first good look at it, as Sony has dropped an official trailer. Better late than never, right?
Based on Stephen King’s epic seven-book fantasy series, the film stars Idris Elba as the last Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, following his quest to find the titular Dark Tower before the Main in Black (Matthew McConaughey) can destroy it. Fans have waited years to see King’s work adapted to the screen, but word on the street has been that the film — the first in a planned trilogy — will differ greatly from the source material and this trailer definitely confirms that.
The basic premise looks to be the same, but it feels like Ancel is ratcheting up the action (we see Roland use his guns a lot in this preview) and downplaying the weirder tone that permeates King’s books. To be fair, a straight adaptation of The Dark Tower would be next to impossible and with the combined talents of Elba and McConaughey, this could still be something special. That being said, if you’re a huge fan of the books, it’s probably best to temper your expectations a bit.
The Dark Tower arrives on August 4th.
