Could The ‘Venom’ Spider-Man Spin-Off Be An R-Rated Horror Movie?

The spinoff movie focused on Spider-Man villain Venom is reportedly due to start shooting this fall and is being billed as an “Action / Horror / Sci-fi” film.

As reported by casting website MyEntertainmentWorld (via IGN), a fall shoot would fit with the film’s scheduled release date of October 5, 2018.

Venom’s genre listings are what are catching the most attention, as it’s rare for films in the superhero space to be labeled as “horror.” With Fox’s recent successes with R-rated superhero films like Deadpool and Logan, there is speculation that Sony Pictures could be looking to do the same with Venom.  Reports has already emerged stating that Venom will be separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe despite Spider-Man being part of it, meaning that Sony would theoretically not have to stick to the PG-ratings mandate of that franchise.

Not much else is known about Venom right now, including director and cast information, but we’ll be sure to provide updates as they become available.
