The X-Men standalone film, Gambit, could be in trouble. As reported by The Wrap, Channing Tatum is close to walking away from the project amid a breakdown in negotiations between the actor and 20th Century Fox, who are producing the film. Gambit, which is still being helmed by director Rupert Wyatt, is scheduled for release on October 7, 2016.
This comes as a shock, given that Tatum made an appearance at San Diego Comic Con’s X-Men panel earlier this month to hype the film. There is speculation that Tatum may walk due a focus on other projects (he is planning to make his directional debut soon), but there has yet to be any firm confirmation either way.
To be fair, a standalone Gambit film always sounded like a poor idea. Although the character is very popular, he’s not exactly substantial enough to support an entire film (there’s a reason he’s part of a superhero team). Still, it will be disappointing if Tatum is replaced by another actor, as he’s clearly passionate about the project and it would be interesting to see his interpretation of the character.
