Carrie Fisher is recognized for being one of Hollywood’s most outspoken stars and has been upfront about many of her personal experiences over her 40 year career, including a battle with drugs and alcohol in her younger years. That being said, the actress best known for playing Princess/General Leia never shared the details of the affair she had with her Star Wars co-star Harrison Ford … until now.
In her new book, The Princess Diarist, described as an “intimate, hilarious and revealing recollection of what happened behind the scenes’ of the first Star Wars, Fisher reveals that she had an intimate off-screen relationship with Ford for three months in 1976. As noted by PEOPLE, Fisher was 19 at the time and Ford was 33 and a married father of two.
“It was so intense,” Fisher told PEOPLE in a follow-up interview. “It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend.”
According to Fisher, she finally decided to open up about the relationship after rereading some of her journals from the time, many of which she used to help write The Princess Diarist. She reveals that the affair began after Star Wars director George Lucas’s birthday party, in which she and Ford spent their first night together. Their relationship would last the entire time filming.
Fisher notes in her book that she was riddled with self-doubt while her and Ford were together, feeling herself unworthy of the actor’s affections. “I looked over at Harrison,” she writes. “A hero’s face — a few strands of hair fell over his noble, slightly furrowed brow. How could you ask such a shining specimen of a man to be satisfied with the likes of me?”
However, it appears that Fisher looks back on the relationship fondly, stating, “I was so inexperienced, but I trusted something about him. He was kind.”
Ford has declined to comment on Fisher’s story, but did receive a draft copy of The Princess Diarist to look over before it was published.
