Benicio del Toro’s Role In ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Has Been Revealed

We’ve known for a while now that Oscar-winner Benicio del Toro is in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, with writer/director Rian Johnson confirming the casting back when principal photography began in February 2016 but much like everything else having to do with the film, del Toro’s character has remained a mystery. Fans have speculated that del Toro is playing everything from Star Wars Rebels villain Grand Admiral Thrawn to Boba Fett’s son, but it looks like the truth is something much different.

According to a new report from Making Star Wars, del Toro plays a character named “D.J.” in The Last Jedi, although it sounds like that may just be a code name used during production. D.J. is said to be introduced on the planet of Canto Bight, which has been described as a “casino planet.” The character’s costume and physical appearance, which includes an all-black trench coat, mark him as someone who is familiar with the shadier corners of the galaxy and he “looks slimy and dirty.” He also wears a “bill-less cap.” Reportedly, D.J. is neither a hero nor villain, as the Resistance apparently does not view him as a “bad guy” in the traditional sense. There is also new information regarding del Toro’s ship, which ironically looks “really fancy” and is said to look like Queen Amidala’s Nubian royal starship in The Phantom Menace on the exterior and resembles the interior of the Enterprise from the Star Trek reboot films. The ship features a cockpit with a co-pilot seat and a “communal section” in another part of the ship, complete with booth and table.  The ship’s overall feel is likened to that of “a nice hotel” and it’s believed that D.J. didn’t acquire it through legitimate means.

With Star Wars Celebration just around the corner, we’re sure to learn more about del Toro’s character, as well as the other new characters played by Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran …

… and a trailer. There better be a trailer.
