It looks like Thanos’ motivations in Avengers: Infinity War may not have to do with courting Death after all.
As many Marvel Comics fans are aware, the Infinity Gauntlet storyline finds Thanos gathering all the Infinity Gems together in an effort to win the affections of the character of Death. Naturally, this plan includes trying to eradicate all life in the universe. It was assumed up to this point that the Mad Titan’s plans would be quite similar in Marvel’s upcoming crossover film, but new comments from one of the film’s writers suggests that he has a different goal in mind.
On the new Digital HD release of Doctor Strange, Infinity War co-writer Stephen McFeely outlined Thanos’ plans during a special Phase 3 feature:
“His goal is to re-balance the universe as he sees it. So when he figures out that the Infinity Stones could do this form him at the snap of a finger, that becomes his main goal.”
We have no idea what “re-balancing” the universe might entail, but it’s pretty clear that it won’t be good news for the Avengers and the rest of the Marvel heroes. It’s interesting that McFeely doesn’t mention anything about Death, although it’s still possible that the character will figure into the film’s plot somehow.
We’re sure to learn more about the plot of Avengers: Infinity War as we get closer to its May 4, 2018 release.
