Anthony Mackie Explains Why The Marvel Movies Can’t Crossover With Netflix Shows

Ever since Netflix released Daredevil, the first of what soon become many TV shows based on street-level heroes in the Marvel universe, back in 2015, fans have been hoping for a crossover between the movie and TV universes. After all, the likes of Daredevil and Jessica Jones technically occupy the same cinematic universe as Captain America and Iron Man, so why shouldn’t the Defenders get to share the screen with the Avengers? Unfortunately, even though many actors have said they’re open to the idea, nothing has ever happened and if Anthony Mackie is to be believed, it probably never will.

Mackie, who plays Captain America’s ally Falcon in the Marvel movies, recently addressed the idea of a crossover with the Netflix characters at Wizard World Cleveland and here’s what he had to say on the matter:

“Different universes, different worlds, different companies, different designs. [Marvel Studios President] Kevin Feige is very specific about how he wants the Marvel Universe to be seen in the film world. It wouldn’t work. It wouldn’t work at all.”

Mackie seems to be of a very different mind on the whole crossover idea than Daredevil actor Charlie Cox, who said at Wizard World Pittsburgh back in November (and numerous times before) that he wants to do a crossover but so far, no one from Marvel has approached him about it:

“I’d love that too. Those Easter eggs are thrilling to me. As they are to all of you guys, the fans. Sadly, Elden [Henson] and myself have not been invited to the conversations that take place where they make those decisions. So, until we are invited to those conversations, we have no idea what’s going to happen.”

With Iron Fist just recently hitting Netflix and The Defenders and The Punisher on the way, the Netflix side of the Marvel universe doesn’t appear to be in any danger of going away anytime soon, but hopefully the movie and TV departments can find a way to collaborate in the future.
