According to a statement from Microsoft yesterday, the Xbox One was September’s top-selling console.
“Xbox One was the best-selling console in September in the U.S.,” the statement said, citing numbers provided by the NPD Group. As Microsoft notes, this makes September the “third month in a row” where the Xbox One was the sales leader. The company also said that the Xbox One was the top seller in the UK, based on data collected by market research firm GfK Entertainment UK.
Although Microsoft did not note the reason for the Xbox One’s recent sales success, it can likely be attributed to the release of the new Xbox One S model back in August. With Sony having just launched the PlayStation VR this week and also preparing to release the more powerful PS4 Pro in November, the holiday season is sure to be a closer competition between the two console rivals than it has in recent years, where Sony’s PS4 has enjoyed a commanding lead.
