Popular European squad Team Secret defeated the defending TI5 Champions Evil Geniuses 3-1 in a Best-of-Five Grand Final to claim the MLG World Finals title and over $100,000. After a disappointing finish at TI5, Secret completely reshuffled its roster, with only one of the five players who took part in The International returning. After receiving a direct invite to ESL One New York despite not having played an official match since changing rosters, Secret was shockingly defeated in the finals by Vega Squadron, who came out of nowhere to win the event. Meanwhile, EG had been under scrutiny after bowing out in the first round of ESL One, but silenced their doubters with an impressive run to the finals at MLG. Both teams should have some positive momentum heading into the Frankfurt Majors in mid-November. The win must have been especially sweet for Secret’s highly-touted carry player Jacky “EternaLEnVy” Mao, who won his first LAN event since MLG Columbus in 2013, ending a string of tournaments where his teams had placed highly, but failed to come away with any victories.
Meanwhile, TI5 runners-up CDEC Gaming and newly-formed (Monkey) Business also impressed in a field full of strong competition, finishing with a share of 3rd place, while Chinese powerhouse LGD Gaming, who finished third at The International, failed to make it out of the group stages, losing all of their matches. All three teams will also be at the Frankfurt Majors, which begin November 16th.
