SUPER MARIO ODYSSEY Will Be The First Mario Game Not Rated ‘E’ For Everyone

Mario has always been a family-friendly plumber, with each one of his games receiving an E rating from the Entertainment Software Rating Board, but it looks like the upcoming Super Mario Odyssey will be the first game in the franchise to buck that trend.

As spotted by GoNintendo, the Nintendo Switch game will sport an E10+ rating, which indicates that the game’s contents are considered inappropriate for anyone under the age of 10. Granted, an E10+ game is still considered to be family-friendly, but it’s still interesting to see the ESRB slap the rating on Super Mario Odyssey when no other Mario game has been rated that high.

According to the ESRB’s ratings guide, an E10+ game is likely to contain “more cartoon, fantasy or mild violence, mild language and/or minimal suggestive themes.” While the ESRB has not yet released its rundown of reasons for Super Mario Odyssey’s E10+ designation, we’d wager that it has something to do with Mario’s disturbing new ability to possess any creature he comes into contact with using his hat.

We’ll find out for sure whether Super Mario Odyssey is appropriate for anyone under the age of 10 when it releases on October 27.
