Surprising no one, EA announced today that Star Wars Battlefront 2 is on the way and that it will feature content from the new Star Wars films, including The Force Awakens.
During an earnings call, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen confirmed that Battlefront 2 will have “bigger and better worlds” and that the game will feature content from “the new movies,” though he didn’t specifically mention any specific title.
EA received some criticism for last year’s Star Wars Battlefront reboot only featuring characters and settings from the original Star Wars trilogy, so it’s understandable that they would want to address these complaints in the sequel.
Star Wars Battlefront will come out sometime “next year” according to Jorgensen, although it’s unclear if this means the game will ship in 2017 or during EA’s fiscal year 2017, which just started on April 1. Additionally, Jorgensen stated that EA plans to release one new Star Wars game every year for the next three to four years, which includes the untitled Star Wars action game currently being developed by Visceral and Motive studios.
Star Wars Battlefront was one of the best-selling games of 2015, with EA having shipped 14 million copies worldwide to date. We gave it a 7 out of 10 in our review, stating that “Star Wars Battlefront is a gorgeous game that is held back by its lack of depth and high price.” Hopefully EA also addresses these issues with the sequel.
