Update: Pokemon Go developer Niantic confirmed during the game’s Comic-Con panel this past weekend that the Eevee evolution trick indeed works. Players can dictate whether Eevee evolves into Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon by naming their Eevee either Rainer, Sparky, or Pyro, respectively. Niantic CEO John Hanke also mentioned that there are other Easter eggs in the game that players haven’t discovered yet, which probably explains why the quest to find Ditto remains active.
Original Story: Evolving Pokémon in Pokémon Go is relatively straightforward: just save up enough of a particular candy and hit the evolve button. Unfortunately, the Pokémon Eevee throws a wrench into this simple process by evolving at random into one of its three possible evolved forms — Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon. In the classic Pokémon games, players could use a specific elemental stone to dictate which form they wanted their Eevee to take, but in Pokémon Go, they’re at the mercy of random chance.
Fortunately, a solution has been discovered.
The Pokémon Go Reddit community has discovered that the key to making Eevee evolve into the form you want is to give it a specific alternate name:
- To evolve Eevee into Vaporeon, rename it Rainer
- To evolve Eevee into Jolteon, rename it Sparky
- To evolve Eevee into Flareon, rename it Pyro
Why these names specifically? It all ties into an episode from the Pokémon TV show where Ash meets a group of brothers who each have an Eevee evolution. Rainer, Sparky, and Pyro are the names of the three brothers who have a Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon, respectively.
If you decide to go this route, make sure you quit out of the app and reload before triggering the evolution, just in case the app doesn’t register the name change. There have also been reports from some players that this trick didn’t work from them, so it’s not quite a 100% guarantee that you’ll get the Eevee form you want. Still, you might as well give it a shot if you’re trying to fill out that Pokédex.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there’s a way to make Eevee evolve into an Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon, or Sylveon yet …
