Nintendo Switch Won’t Let You Transfer Memory Cards Between Systems

The Nintendo Switch doesn’t allow users to backup save files and it turns out that it also won’t allow you to use your microSD cards on multiple Switch consoles.

Polygon reports that when you try to put a microSD card that’s already been formatted to work with one Switch into another, the following warning comes up:

“The microSD card is being used by another Nintendo Switch console or was used on this console before it was initialized. Delete the Nintendo Switch data on the microSD card to use it on this console.

Save data, screenshots, and other data not related to Nintendo Switch won’t be deleted. You can remove the microSD card if you don’t want to use it on this console.”

The inability to transfer data is further evidence that save data is tied to a single Switch, as the lack of cloud saves or other back-ups means everything is stored internally. Although the inability to bring your saves over to a friend’s Switch isn’t a huge deal, especially considering the portable nature of the console, it’s still a peculiar roadblock given that the Xbox 360 had this sort of functionality back in 2005.
