Nintendo Reveals First Details For ‘The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild’ DLC

Nintendo has announced new details about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s first downloadable content pack, scheduled to drop later this year.

Available as part of the game’s $19.99 season pass, The Master Trials will include the Trial of the Sword, a new Hard Mode, a Hero’s Path Mode, a Travel Medallion, Korok Mask, and eight new pieces of equipment inspired by previous Zelda characters and games.

Formerly known as the Cave of Trials Challenge, Trial of the Sword includes 45 total rooms in which players, as Link, must defeat all enemies from one room to another, but with the caveat that they don’t start with any armor or weapons. Conquering this challenge ensures that the Master Sword will “always be in its glowing powered-up state” in the main game.

Hard Mode will feature increased ranks for enemies “and players might even encounter higher-ranking enemies they wouldn’t find through normal play.” Enemies will also be able to recover health during battle and can spot Link more easily. The mode also introduces a number of planks floating throughout the world. Once reached, these planks will present players with the chance to battle enemies and collect additional treasure. The Hero’s Path Mode functions as a tracker of player progress. According to Nintendo, the new mode “will document every step players take,” marking a green path on the game’s map tracking back through the player’s last 200 hours. Plays can also track their footsteps over a sliding timeline. The mode works retroactively too, so any previous progress a player has made will also be tracked up to the 200 hour limit.

The Travel Medallion will be hidden in a new chest somewhere in the game and once found, will grant players the ability to create a fast-travel point from where Link is standing, meaning that they can teleport back to that point at any time.

The Korok Mask allows players to more easily find Koroks and will shake when one is nearby. And finally, the new equipment will be themed around characters like Midna and Tingle(!), as well as games like Majora’s Mask and Phantom Hourglass.

No information about the second DLC pack was provided and Nintendo has not given an exact release date for The Master Trials pack, which is still slated for “summer 2017.”
