New Nintendo 2DS XL Announced Out Of Nowhere

To the surprise of many — not least because the announcement came on a Thursday night — Nintendo has revealed the New Nintendo 2DS, which will hit store shelves in Australia/New Zealand on June 15 and the US on July 28. The new model has a recommended retail price of USD $150 / AUD $200.

Nintendo believes that the new device will fit a hole in the market between the existing Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL systems, as the price and list of features sits between both.

“This new addition to Nintendo’s portable hardware line demonstrates our commitment to the hand-held market,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “New Nintendo 2DS XL sports a beautiful clamshell design and offers a great balance between price and performance.”

The only notable difference between the New Nintendo 2DS XL and the New Nintendo 3DS XL is the lack of 3D display, as Nintendo reports that the two systems pack the same amount of power and that the 2DS is actually lighter. If you don’t care about glasses-free 3D, this could very well be the best handheld in the 2DS/3DS line from a value perspective.

The New 2DS XL will actually launch on the same day as two new 3DS games, Hey! PIKMIN and Miitopia.
