New ‘Mario & Sonic’ Game Sparks Controversy With Explicit Swear Word

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games may be rated E for Everyone, but some families are throwing their copies away after hearing what one of the characters has to say for himself.

Allegedly, Shadow the Hedgehog can be heard uttering the word c*** at one point in the new Wii U game. The story was first reported by the UK tabloid The Mirror, with the paper describing how one father from Barnstaple, North Devon decided to throw the game in the trash after his young daughter started using the swear word around the house.

“During the football section of the game, there is a specific character called ‘Shadlow’ that every time a shot is blocked, saved, or even tackled he would shout the word ‘c***,'” Steve Jones explains.

It sound unlikely that a company as family-friendly as Nintendo let a word like that make the final cut, but it certainly sounds like that’s what Shadow is saying in the video put together by Eurogamer below.

Jones had said that he’s contacted Nintendo about this issue and reports that company told him they would look into the matter. Until then … maybe consider holding off on getting this game for your little ones unless you want them to learn some interesting new vocabulary.
