A New York farm is hitting all the right gaming nostalgia buttons with a giant corn maze featuring Mario, Luigi, and other characters from the Mushrrom Kingdom.
The maze covers close to eight acres of Stoughton Farm in Newark Valley, New York. As Tim Stoughton tells ABC News, the farm has featured a different corn maze theme every year since 2005.
“My wife, Deb, decides the theme,” said Stoughton. “She just liked the idea of the Mario brothers because everybody pretty much knows what they are and it’d be fun for the kids to see.”
It usually takes Stoughton and his employees a few weeks to build the maze, with this year’s design coming from a company in Utah The farm’s corn maze typically attracts around 10,000 visitors per year.
“We lay it out into grids and then go in and take the corn out where the pathways should be,” said Stoughton. “We do it when you can still see over the corn, before it gets too tall.”
A friend of the family who also happens to be a pilot took an aerial photo of the Super Mario Bros. maze, which was posted to Reddit by Mike Winmann, who works near the farm.
Stoughton said that he and his wife came up with the maze tradition 12 years ago as a way to draw more attention to their family-run farm, which sells produce and other goods, and as a way to help out with the farm’s expenses.
“We wanted something big to do, to keep us profitable and keep the place running,” he said.
Hopefully the keep the gaming theme going next year, as a Legend of Zelda corn maze would be a logical next step!
