Artifact: Valve’s Fan Disservice

If you’ve not yet heard of Valve’s up-and-coming game, prepare to be either highly disappointed, or “meh”-feeling. There isn’t much reception in-between…

At least, this seems to be the general consensus to Artifact, a DOTA based, 1v1 card battler. See what people are saying at Kotaku. It’s both sad, and hilarious.

What can gamers expect from the game, and what else could they be missing out on? Well, we don’t know much as of yet. In fact, all we’ve seen is this simple teaser trailer:

If you’ve ever seen a Valve meme, you’re likely familiar with the ongoing joke stemming from the developer’s refusal to produce a threequel to Half-Life. Certainly, they’ve produced games which people love: CS:GO, Portal 1 and 2, Defense of the Ancients, Team Fortress and Half Life, just to name a few. But this is why the stakes are so high for Artifact to succeed; Valve tends to set the bar high, and this is not what people had in mind for a new title… I mean, common! Half Life THREE! What are you waiting for, Valve!?

What’s worse, card battlers are starting to become a ‘dime-a-dozen’ genre, riding off the recent success of Hearthstone, Blizzard’s card game featuring characters and abilities from their War Craft series. Admittedly, these games can offer a level of depth and competitive gameplay that is both fun and rewarding when strategies pay off, but… Half Life 3!! COMMON!!

Will Artifact be able to compete with Hearthstone? Only time will tell. Leave a comment in the section below if you think it has a shot, and for all the latest updates and Artifact news, find it here on Goliath!
